David Sanchez (Farmersville) and the rest of the Boys Div IV Top 5 - Race Album

McFarland repeated as Section champion with just 26 points and a gap of just 20 seconds and a team time of 83:15. Avenal was second with 61 points and Parlier was third with 91 points. All three advance to the State meet. Senior David Sanchez of Farmersville, who was fourth last year, led right from the start and was never challenged, running splits of 4:45 and 10:10 en route to at time of 16:13. Earlier this year he had run 15:57 at the Clovis Invitational, but that was in the very competitive Sweepstakes race. McFarland took second and third with Alfonso Cisneros at 16:24 and Eddie Garcia at 16:33 as the Cougars had five runners in the top 10 scoring places.

Jordan Hasay (Mission Prep) and the rest of the Girls D5 Top 5 - Race Album

Junior Jordan Hasay of Mission College Prep (San Luis Obispo) won her third straight Section title with a time of 17:26 in a race that closely resembled her Clovis Invitational Sweepstakes race she won in 17:23 five weeks earlier. She was totally unpressed in running splits of 5:21 and 11:08. Finishing second in 18:59 was freshman Annie Mooney also of Mission Prep, which repeated as section champions with 24 points and a time of 102:04. Also qualifying for State were Central Valley Christian (Visalia) in second with 34 points and Bakersfield Christian in third with 88 points.

12:00 – Division 4 Girls - Full Results - Short Race Video - Allison Gonzales Video Interview

Allison Gonzales (Exeter) and the rest of the Girls D4 Top 5 - Race Album

Senior Allison Gonzales of Exeter won her third consecutive individual Section title at 19:48, after finishing fifth as freshman. The win did not come easy for Gonzales as Ruby Lara of McFarland was right with her at the mile in 5:50 before Gonzales pulled away to reach two miles in 12:23. Lara was second at 20:04. Exeter was able to pack three finishers in the top five and repeat as team champions with 37 points and a team time of 107:52. San Joaquin Memorial (Fresno) also qualified for state with 66 points.

Ben Siquieros (Mission Prep) and the rest of the D5 Top 5 - Race Album

Central Valley Christian (Visalia), with five runners in the top 15, was the easy winner with 38 points and a team time of 92:52. Tranquility was the second qualifier to state with 55 points. Senior Ben Siquieros of Mission College Prep (San Luis Obispo), second last year in 17:39, was content to remain in second place through a 5:13 mile before taking the lead and passing two miles in 11:08 on the way to a winning effort of 17:04. Francisco Parra of Tranquility was second in 17:38.

1:30 – Division 1 Girls - Full Results - Short Video

Meghan Marvin (Clovis) and the rest of the Girls D1 Top 5 - Race Album

Buchanan (Clovis) was not quite as good as it was last year when it won the title with 18 points but it used the same tactics—a real close grouping—to defend its title with 51 points. The Bears finished 8-9-10-11-13 with a gap of just 28 seconds.  Clovis East with 76 points and Clovis with 88 points also advanced to State. Clovis was the Division II champion in 2006. Sophomore Meghan Marvin of Clovis, the defending Division II champion at 18:43, was the individual winner in 18:26. Marvin was with a pack of six at the mile passed in 5:37 but took command by two miles, passed in 11:45. Teammate Saylah Berserian, also a sophomore, was second at 18:45.

2:00 – Division 3 Boys - Full Results - Short Video

Justin Vilhauer (Redwood) and other Boys D3 Top finishers - Race Album

Last week in the West Yosemite League Mt. Whitney (Visalia) received a real scare from Redwood (Visalia), winning by just two points, 43-45. But that was not the case today at Mt. Whitney used a tight pack to scored 44 points and defeat Madera South, which finished second with 91, and Redwood, which was third with 98. Mt. Whitney and Madera South advanced to State. Mt. Whitney was 4-5-8-13-14 with a 37-second gap and a time of 86:29. Mt. Whitney’s top finisher was junior Cole Younger at 16:49. Continuing to improve was freshman Justin Vilhauer of Redwood, who was the individual winner in 16:30. Junior Tony Rodriguez of Washington (Fresno), with best of just 4:41 for 1,600 and 10:24 for 3,200 in track, was second in 16:41 and junior Scott Isaac of Redwood was third at 16:47.

2:30 – Division 2 Girls - Full Results - Short Video

Brianna Diaz (Delano) and the rest of the Girls D2 Top 5 - Race Album

Centennial (Bakersfield), continuing a meet theme of closely grouped runners resulting in team championships, place its top five runners between fourth and 10th, scoring 31 points to defeat Golden West (Visalia), with 63 and Highland (Bakersfield), with 114. All three teams advance to the State meet. Centennial gapped just 31 seconds and had a team time of 107:05. Allysa Mejia of Reedley was the leader at the mile in 5:52 but was overtaken at two miles by individual entrant senior Brianna Diaz, who went on to win in 19:38. Mejia was second at 20:04 and Crystal Gonzalez of Golden West was third at 20:11.

3:00 – Division 1 Boys - Full Results - Short Video

Chris Schwartz (Foothill, Bakersfield) and the rest of the Boys D1 Top 5 - Race Album

After the TRAC League finals (Clovis area plus Madera) there may have been some doubt as to who the best team was with Buchanan (Clovis) winning by just six points over Clovis East and Madera. But there was no doubt which team was the best after Thursday. Buchanan, which finished second last year, placed four in the top seven and gapped just 46 seconds to score 34 points and a team time of 79:23. Clovis East was second with 74 points followed by Clovis West with 84 and Madera with 98. The first three teams qualified for State. Junior Chris Schwartz of Foothill (Bakersfield), who was the Division II champion in 2006, seems to do just enough to win. He led a small group of three runners past the mile in 4:47 and opened up about a 10 meter gap by two miles, passed in 10:03. However, there was a closely grouped chase pack of four runners that included: Andrew Campbell of Clovis West, Jonathan Sanchez and Heath Reedy of Buchanan and Orea Isai of Madera. In the end, Schwartz just held off Sanchez, 15:31 to 15:33, with Campbell third and Heath fourth, both at 15:41.

3:30 – Division 3 Girls - Full Results - Short Video

Cassandra Salazar (Shafter) and the rest of the Girls D3 Top 5 - Race Album

Shafter repeated at Division champions but it was not nearly as easy as it was in 2006 when it won by 40 points with a score of 37 points. This year Shafter scored 62 points to hold off Yosemite (Oakhurst) at 73 and Madera with 93. Shafter and Yosemite advanced to State. The Generals were pace by the one-two finish of senior Cassandra Salazar, at 19:43, and junior Elizabeth Wittenberg, at 19:53. Both runners were in the top three the entire way. Salazar led a one mile in 5:55.

4:00 – Division 2 Boys - Full Results - Short Race Video

Brant Jones (Centennial) and the rest of the Boys D2 Top 5 - Race Album

Centennial (Bakersfield) used a one-three finish to edge Highland (Bakersfield), 52-59, to win the team title. Both teams qualified for State. Golden West (Visalia) was third with 85 points. Marc Hernandez of Edison (Fresno) had the early lead at the mile (5:02) but by the two-mile mark (10:31), Brant Jones of Centennial had a very small lead over Oscar Fuentes of East (Bakersfield), Allen Aguirre of Tulare Western and Arturo Ramirez of Centennial. Jones and Fuentes battled for the final mile with Jones prevailing, 16:31 to 16:39. Ramirez of Centennial was third at 16.49.
